Strawberry Rhubarb Sangria

Rhubarb Week: Strawberry Rhubarb Sangria

by Jillian Bedell on June 1, 2012

A boozy wine punch is an excellent way to entertain casually in the Summertime. Sangria makes any small gathering of friends feel like a party. This one is the perfect combination of sweet and tart. I am loving lemons right now – they are so refreshing, simple, and clean. The rhubarb tints it a pretty pink and the ginger adds a little something extra. Your guests will never know what hit them!

Strawberry Rhubarb Sangria

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle crisp white wine
  • 1 cup white rum
  • 2 cups lemonade
  • 6 strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 rhubarb stalks, chopped
  • 1 lemon, sliced into rounds
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 cup sparkling water

Method:

Combine all ingredients except the sparkling water in a large pitcher or jar and let it marinate all day or overnight in the refrigerator. Splash the seltzer into each glass when serving, and remember to include some of the fruit in every serving!

Jillian grew up in Connecticut, went to university in Boston, college in New Haven, did some post-grad soul searching in New York, exiled herself to Mexico, married her longtime sweetheart, and lived in a house on the ocean. She suspected Maine might be the perfect place to raise a family, so she came back home to New England two years ago. Now a mom to Violet Maeve and living in Rockland, where she hopes to settle for a good, long while, Jillian reads, writes, walks, and practices Nia, when not watching Malcolm photograph sandwiches.

This would also be good using Putney Winery (VT) Rhubard wine. It is very good. I know, I was a doubter too, but give it a try.
