Notes: There’s no other way to put it. Today’s sandwich was a complete and utter disappointment. We had been excited about trying the fresh sandwich options at Whole Foods, but probably won’t return. After trying to direct me to one of their pre-made sandwiches, and not being able to tell me about what kind of bread they had, I ended up with an utterly anemic roast beef and cheddar on a whole wheat roll. I tried to jazz it up by adding their habanero mayonnaise, but what I ended up with was a lifeless, flavorless mess. I would have been thrilled with this sandwich at half the price; but at around eight bucks, this one simply wasn’t worth it.

I read this as “on a whole wheat troll”, which is about right. Though the chili was tasty.
Whole Foods has really been dropping the ball lately, in my opinion. It started out with so much promise, but in my last few visits, I’ve encountered unnecessary delays at the bakery counter (because the employees were too busy chatting in the back to notice someone waiting), sub-par sandwiches from the deli (especially the make-your-own-sandwich offerings, which have been pared down considerably from what used to be offered), employees who simply aren’t knowledgeable about what is and isn’t in stock (and who don’t care to find out) and the Mexican grill, which seems to take a ridiculous amount of time to do anything… even something as simple as putting together a burrito.
I agree wholeheartedly, Winter. Our first few trips there, we were awed by the lunchtime possibilities, but the small army of staff there has been, on the whole, pretty disappointing. When I asked the lady at the sandwich counter what kind of bread she had, she looked at me like I had just set my own legs on fire. This kind of attitude is, at times, eclipsed by some very helpful, courteous employees, but after the kinds of pre-made foods I have been getting there, I am going to use them for what I think they do best: organic produce and the occasional lamb kebab on nights we are too lazy to cook. The food on the grocery side has definitely been dubious, however, the burgers on the cafe side have been pretty good in general – nice choice of toppings, cooked to order (they get my medium-well right on most of the time). The fries are tasty, if sometimes a little on the soggy or overcooked. I just wish they were open later than 7pm, especially in the summer.
