October Giveaway: Whoopsies! Whoopie Pies

by Malcolm Bedell on October 3, 2011

The wonderful folks at Whoopsies! Gourmet Whoopie Pies are sponsoring this month’s Giveaway, and have offered a DOZEN of their world-class gourmet assorted whoopie pies to this month’s winner! These whoopie pies are packed in a decorative gift box, can be shipped anywhere, and feature all natural, modern ingredients, in flavors such as “Vanilla Latte” and “Amaretto Pumpkin.” (We recently had a chance to sample some of these new twists on the classic Maine dessert staple, as well as interview the owner of the company, and let me tell you: these people know their whoopie pies.)

Entering the drawing for this Giveaway couldn’t be simpler. Just make sure you “Like” the From Away Facebook page, and you’ll be entered to win. We’ll draw the winning names on Tuesday, November, 1st, 2011, and send you a Facebook message to collect your details.

The three winners of our September Giveaway, a $15 gift certificate to The Gelato Fiasco’s flagship store in Brunswick, were Susan H. from South Harpswell, Katy A. from Stonington, and Kat W. from Saco. Congratulations to all of our winners!

My first memories of cooking start in Maine at six years old, when I wore a yellow rainslicker to avoid getting spattered by the bacon I was frying in a skillet. My interest in both Mexican cooking and recreating classic New England dishes from scratch developed while living in Mexico, on a steady diet of pork and habanero peppers. You can see more of my writing and photography online on Serious Eats, the Huffington Post, BlogHer, and Foodista, as well as in print for Downeast, Indulge, and Cigar Snob magazines.

Give away Whoopsie! Whoopie! It’s like manna from heaven! I have the cook book, I have the ingredients, but they never get made. And so many uninitiated here in my new homeland on the west coast that I ought to feed. I could sure use a little inspiration to get me started (and I’d even share….).

I Like staying in touch with my native land through From Away – thank you!

Ahhhh, whoopie pies! I unexpectedly became The Cool Aunt when I brought homemade whoopie pies to my visiting niece and nephews. Their mom had asked me to pick up some for dessert, but the bakery only had a few, so I whipped ‘em together from pantry staples.

Bonus: homemade whoopie pies means you can make a few smaller ones for little hands or for grown-ups who want to practice some restraint.

Double-bonus: with homemade whoopie pies, the kids can help assemble them, which was a source of much giggling and excitement.

But boy howdy, I do enjoy a bakery-bought whoopie pie. Mmmm.

I’ve heard about whoopie pies for years and have always wanted to have one. I have a good friend that lives in Maine and she torments me with them all the time when she goes out to eat and has a whoopie pie. I can’t wait to make them and call her to brag that I’ve finally had a whoopie pie!!!!!!!!
